Gerhard Schmitz

Gerhard Schmitz (born November 27, 1907 in Neuss ; † August 11, 1984 in Rostock ) was a German fluid mechanic .

Life

After graduating from high school, Schmitz studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and applied mechanics at the universities in Cologne and Göttingen . After receiving his doctorate in 1934 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen, he worked from 1935 to 1945 as head of the aerodynamics and flight mechanics department at the Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in Warnemünde . After various activities after the end of the Second World War , he and his family were brought to the Soviet Union in 1946, where he worked as the main department head for applied mechanics in Kimry until 1954 (see Action Ossawakim ). After his return to Germany in 1954 he became a professor with a chair for fluid dynamics at the shipbuilding faculty of the University of Rostock . From 1969 he was a full professor in the Ship Technology Section. In 1973 he retired.

In 1967 Schmitz was elected a full member of the GDR Academy of Sciences . In 1962 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. In 1965 he was honored with the title of Honored Technician of the People . He was a member of various committees of the Ministry of Higher Education and Technical Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the GDR .

One of his sons is the engineer Klaus-Peter Schmitz .
