Gerhard Scholz (soccer player)

Gerhard Scholz (born April 7, 1935 - February 21, 1970 ) was a German soccer player . From 1954 to 1960 he played a total of 94 league games and scored 24 goals in what was then the first-class Oberliga Nord for the clubs VfB Oldenburg , Eintracht Nordhorn and Eintracht Braunschweig .

Career

Scholz belonged to the youth national team of the DFB, which opened the official youth international games with the international match on March 31, 1953 in Liège against Argentina. The DFB first took part in the UEFA youth tournament in 1953 . He formed the German runner row with Karl Hoffmann and Louis Buderus in the 3-2 victory in the then usual World Cup system . Scholz was also used in the two other tournament games against Spain (1: 5) and England (1: 3). Despite the later outstanding offensive players Uwe Seeler , Klaus Stürmer and Ernst-Günter Habig, the DFB juniors were eliminated from the tournament after the group phase.

After Scholz had achieved promotion to the Oberliga Nord in 1954 under coach Hans Tibulski with the team from the Donnerschwee stadium, VfB Oldenburg, he made his debut as a right wing runner on August 22, 1954 in a 2-1 home win in front of 12,000 spectators FC St. Pauli in the major league. At the end of the round, VfB finished eleventh and the talent had scored five goals in 25 league games alongside ex-international Erich Hänel . After the second league season 1955/56 Scholz rose with teammates such as Herbert Bayer and Burghard Rylewicz after another 22 league games (two goals) in the amateur camp. In the two following rounds he was with VfB Oldenburg in 1957 in the amateur league Lower Saxony-West champion and 1958 runner-up, but failed in the promotion round on the league return.

Scholz therefore joined the Weinroten from the Eintracht Stadium on Heideweg , Eintracht Nordhorn, for the 1958/59 round . But also on the side of ex-amateur national player Alfred Post , he experienced the second relegation from the league after 28 league games and twelve goals. But he was able to extend his membership in the league with a contract with Eintracht Braunschweig from the 1959/60 season. Under coach Kurt Baluses he completed 18 league games with five goals at the side of goalkeeper Johannes Jäcker and field players like Wolfgang Brase , Heinz Patzig , Walter Schmidt and Werner Thamm ; Braunschweig took eighth place. Scholz had his last league assignment on September 25, 1960 in a 3-2 home win against VfR Neumünster.

At the time of his death, Scholz died of heart failure in an old league tournament in 1970 at the age of 34, the insurance salesman was player-coach at Rot-Weiß Steterburg. He had led the club's A youth to win the Northern Championship in 1968.
