Gerhard Zukriegel

Gerhard Zukriegel (born May 25, 1928 in Vienna ; † December 26, 2015 ) was an Austrian lawyer and organist who worked as the cathedral organist at Salzburg Cathedral for 42 years .

Life

Zukriegel passed his Matura in 1946 at the Piaristengymnasium in Vienna. He then completed a musical education with distinction in the concert organ with Karl Walter at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in Vienna and studied music theory with Joseph Marx and Alfred Uhl . In 1951 he became a doctor of law doctorate . In 1952, Zukriegel moved to Salzburg . There he worked as a lawyer from 1958 to 1997 and has also been the successor to Franz Sauer cathedral organist in Salzburg Cathedral since 1963 . Before that he worked as an organist in the parishes of Maxglan and St. Andrä . The organs of the Salzburg Cathedral were rebuilt in Zukriegel's time as cathedral organist . He held this office until August 2005 and was replaced by Heribert Metzger . In his function as cathedral organist, he organized the organ matinées in the cathedral.

He was also on international concert tours. Gerhard Zuckriegel was the first winner of the Paul Hofhaimer organ competition in 1959 in Radstadt and a member of the Wolfgang von Karajans ensemble . As chairman of the diocesan organ commission, he advised 50 parishes in Salzburg and Tyrol on the purchase of a new church organ .

Gerhard Zukriegel died on December 26, 2015 at the age of 87. On January 23, 2016, a memorial service for him took place in Salzburg Cathedral.
