Heribert Metzger (born November 12, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian organist and musicologist . He has been the cathedral organist at Salzburg Cathedral since 2005 .

life and work

Heribert Metzger received his musical training at the Vienna Music Academy with Alois Forer . From the beginning he was particularly interested in the instrumental music of Johann Sebastian Bach . As a result, he won first prize at the Leipzig Bach Competition on the organ in 1972 . In 1985 he received his doctorate , the subject of his dissertation being the performance practice of Bach's organ works.

Since 1988 Heribert Metzger is professor of organ and improvisation at the University Mozarteum , Salzburg . In 2005 he was appointed to succeed Gerhard Zukriegel as cathedral organist at Salzburg Cathedral ; He is also the chairman of the Salzburg Organ Commission.

Metzger is the author of numerous publications in specialist journals.
