Gerhard van Steenwyck , also Gerard van Steenwijck , Gerhart van Steenwijck , Gerard van Steenwyck , Gerhard van Steenwyck and Gerhart van Steenwyck (active between 1640 and 1660, probably in Delft ) was a Dutch still life and genre painter of the so-called Golden Age .

life and work

There is no reliable information about the life and artistic origin of Gerhard van Steenwyck. Its existence is only derived from two signed armory still lifes , which are now in the private SØR Rusche collection in Oelde and in the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg , and a genre painting that was only discovered in 2010 and which was sold in 2011 via the auction house Sotheby's in Amsterdam was auctioned.

Due to similar motifs with guardroom pictures by the Delft painter Anthonie Palamedesz. Today it is widely assumed that he may also have lived in Delft and may even have been related to the brothers Harmen Steenwijck and Pieter Steenwijck who worked there. Laurens J. Bol thinks it is conceivable that he could possibly have been that student of Evert van Aelst whom Arnold Houbraken praised in his De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen for his skill in depicting the shine and reflection on various pieces of armor . Whether this thesis is correct cannot currently be proven. Neither is there a connection to the N. Steenwyck named by Jacob Campo Weyermann (N = noun; was chosen to mean that the author did not know the first name of the named person) , who was a good-for-nothing but also a talented painter designated by still lifes and vanitas depictions. Maybe Gerhard van Steenwyck also around 1630-1635 in were suffering resulting cease-life of Gerard Dou known of which is today a typical example in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (soldier in the guard room, inv 62.10) is. Assuming a relationship with the brothers Harmen and Pieter van Steenwyck, one could conclude that he may have worked like them for a while with their uncle David Bailly in Leiden.

According to the current state of research, Gerhard van Steenwyck is considered to be a capable and experienced master with a high quality standard, whose oeuvre is currently largely unexplored. His work is generally dated between 1640 and 1660.

Based on the two signed armory still lifes and thus secured for Gerhard van Steenwyck , the painter is now assigned a third armory still life with a very similar composition , which was offered at Sotheby's in London in 1985. Another picture, offered in 2003 at Sotheby's in London, is stylistically very close to the armory pictures of Steenwyck, but cannot be assigned to him without reservation.
