Gerhard Reichsgraf von Dernath (also: von der Nath) (* 1666 ; † July 12, 1740 ) was a Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf diplomat and field marshal .

Life

He was the son of Gerhard von Dernath (von der Nath) (1622–1689), lord of the Holstein estates Hasselburg , Mühlenkamp and Sierhagen . His wife was Christine von Ahlefeldt , chief steward and minister of the Electress of Electoral Saxony and daughter of Detlev von Ahlefeldt and Ida von Pogwisch (1619–1679). Through the children from his marriage to Christine von Ahlefeldt on November 20, 1665, he became the progenitor of all Holstein Counts of Dernath.

Dernath enjoyed an excellent upbringing, was later in the service of Godfishes and in 1695 became colonel of the Dragoon Guard. Then he commanded the Gottorfische troop contingent in the Netherlands. In 1706 he was first lieutenant general and later commander-in-chief of the Gottorfische army and at the same time councilor and member of the ducal government. He was Freiherr von Corters und Hofen, Electoral Saxon Privy Councilor and Field Marshal.

In Schleswig, Dernath had a palace built, the decorative figures of which have been preserved by Theodorus Schlichting in the Flensburg Museum Mountain and the park in front of it . The palace itself burned down in 1868.

His first wife was Christine Dorothea von Rantzau (1676–1717), daughter of Hieronymus von Rantzau (1614–1679) on Nütschau and Hemmelmark and Sophie Elisabeth von Reventlow (1645–1702) in 1697 . For Christine Dorothea it was already the second marriage. Her first husband was Daniel Dietrich v. Buchwaldt, district administrator and bailiff of Gottorf, died in 1696.

In 1722 Dernath married Louise Charlotte von Aldenburg (February 3, 1664 - May 12, 1730) in Hamburg , she was the widow of Major General Christoph Bielke (1654 - August 3, 1704 in the second battle of Höchstädt ) and Daughter of Count Anton I von Aldenburg (1633–1680) and Countess Augusta von Sayn-Wittgenstein († 1704).

His son from his first marriage Gerhard (1700–1749) married Sophie Charlotte von Bassewitz in 1728 . She was the daughter of the Gottorfisch minister and chamber president Henning Friedrich von Bassewitz († 1749).
