Gerhold K. Becker (born July 22, 1943 in Bad Salzschlirf , Hesse) is a German philosopher .

Life

Gerhold K. Becker grew up as the eldest son of the violinist Josef Becker and his wife Agnes, b. Goldbach, in Bad Salzschlirf . After graduating from the humanistic grammar school in Fulda , he studied philosophy and theology at the universities of Frankfurt am Main , Heidelberg and Munich , a. a. with Hans-Georg Gadamer , Dieter Henrich , Hermann Krings , Robert Spaemann , Michael Theunissen , Ernst Tugendhat and Heinrich Fries , Alois Grillmeier , Wolfhart Pannenberg , Karl Rahner , Trutz Rendtorff and Eugen Biser , for whom he started a thesis on the thinking of Ernst Troeltsch summa cum laude received his doctorate. From 1975 to 1986 Becker taught as a research assistant and later as an academic adviser at the Institute for Christian Worldview and Philosophy of Religion at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . During this time he met his future wife, the musicologist and concert pianist Siglind Bruhn . In January 1986, Becker accepted a position at the Department of Religion and Philosophy at what would later become the Hong Kong Baptist University . In 1987 his wife also came to Hong Kong and taught at Hong Kong University for six years . Becker founded Hong Kong's first center for applied ethics in 1991 , which he then headed for ten years. In 1992 he was elected as a full member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 1996 the Hong Kong government appointed him to the Reproductive Medicine Council ; From 2000 to 2004 he headed its ethics committee. Since 2004 he has been teaching as a "permanent visiting professor" at the Graduate School of Philosophy at Assumption University in Bangkok .
