Germán Leguía y Martínez Jakeway (born April 30, 1861 in Lambayeque ; † November 21, 1928 in Magdalena del Mar , Lima ) was a Peruvian politician who was Prime Minister of Peru between 1919 and 1922 .

Life

Germán Leguía y Martínez began to study law at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) after attending school and worked as a lawyer after graduating . In 1905 he became Prefect of the Department of Piura and held this position until 1907. He was also envoy to Ecuador between 1909 and 1911 . After his return, he was appointed Foreign Minister (Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores) for the first time on January 23, 1911 as the successor to Emilio Althaus Dartnell by his cousin Augusto B. Leguía y Salcedo , who was President of Peru between 1908 and 1912 and from 1919 to 1930 appointed and held this ministerial office until his replacement by Wenceslao Valera Olano on September 24, 1912.

On December 6, 1919 Leguía y Martínez succeeded Melitón F. Porras Osores as Prime Minister of Peru (Presidente del Consejo de Ministros) . He held this office until October 7, 1922. Julio Enrique Ego Aguirre succeeded him. At the same time, he also served as Minister of the Interior and Police (Ministro de Gobierno y Policía) between December 6, 1919 and October 7, 1922, and from August 31 to October 1, 1920 and again between March 18 and April 4 , 1922 . April 1921 as acting foreign minister.

His marriage to Francisca Iturregui had five children, including the historian and university professor Jorge Guillermo Leguía .
