Lambayeque is the capital of the Lambayeque province in the region of the same name in northwestern Peru . The city is located in the district of the same name . At the 2017 census it had 58,276 inhabitants, 10 years earlier the number of inhabitants was 48,273.
The city, founded in the 16th century, is located in the desert-like, arid coastal plain of northwestern Peru at an altitude of 18 m . The Pacific coast is 10 km southwest of the city. The metropolis of the region, Chiclayo , is 10 km southeast of Lambayeque. The Panamericana highway runs through Lambayeque. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the Lambayeque area. Several irrigation canals lead from the mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera to the Lambayeque area.
Lambayeque is home to the Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán and Museo Arqueológico Nacional Brüning and the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo .
