German Flatts is a city in present-day Herkimer County , New York , USA. It is located in the southern part of the county, on the south side of the Mohawk River , opposite the village of Herkimer .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city of German Flatts has a total area of 88.6 km², of which 87.3 km² are land and 1.3 km² are water.
German Flatts is delimited to the north by the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal . The villages of Ilion and Mohawk are located in the northwest area, directly on the Mohawk River.
In the northeast area, the New York State Thruway ( Interstate 90 ) crosses German Flatts, which also crosses New York State Route 28 . Routers 28 provide access to both Ilion and Mohawk.
