The German Japan Bowl is an American football game series between the German and Japanese national American football teams. The first game took place on April 24, 2010 in the Düsseldorf ESPRIT arena , just a few months before the American Football European Championship 2010 in Frankfurt am Main . The venue was chosen because of the long football history and the fact that Düsseldorf is home to the largest Japanese community in Germany , the ESPRIT arena (formerly LTU arena) was the home of the two-time World Bowl winner Rhein Fire from NFL Europe until this 2007 was closed. For the German team, the game was primarily a preparation for the upcoming European Championship, but it also served as a comparison with the international level, because Japan is the second strongest football nation in the world. The German Japan Bowl II was held in Kawasaki on April 12, 2014 . There Japan defeated Germany in a shutout 38-0 .
