The Germania was a side paddle steamer that sailed for almost two decades as Prinses Marie under the Dutch flag in the North Sea and most recently as Germania under the German flag in the Baltic Sea .
technical description
The Germania , measured at 1566 GRT, was 84.79 m long and 10.69 m wide. Driven by a compound steam engine with twelve fireplaces and four steam boilers , it reached a speed of 14.5 kn with two side wheels . In 1898, on the now in Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Ltd. New steam boiler installed in the shipyard renamed in Glasgow.
When used in traffic between Vlissingen and Queenborough , the Prinses Marie was designed for 240 passengers for day trips and 150 for night trips. In the Baltic Sea it was approved for 280 passengers. The crew consisted of 37 men.
history
The Dutch shipping company Stoomvaart Maatschappij “Zeeland” from Vlissingen ordered the ship from the John Elder & Co. shipyard in Glasgow in February 1877 . There, the ship arrived in December as Prinses Marie launched . From March 28, 1877, the paddle steamer was in use on the route between Vlissingen and Queenborough . In December 1895 the ship was withdrawn from service and only served as a reserve unit.
The Hamburg shipowner Albert Ballin chartered the Prinses Marie in April 1896 and used her in the Elbe - Helgoland service in 1896 and 1897 .
The Stettiner Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft JF Braeunlich bought the ship in December 1898 and started using it as the Germania passenger ship on the Baltic Sea the following year . The Germania went mainly on the mail steamer Sassnitz-Trelleborg and on the route Sassnitz - Szczecin . After the twin screw steamer Odin was put into service, the Germania was sold for demolition in 1902.
