Germanus Theiss (glassmaker)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germanus Theiß (* July 8, 1867 in Lomnitz near Bentschen ; † January 14, 1945 in Döbern ) was a glassmaker and master glassworker, his name is identical to his son Germanus Theiß (* April 3, 1898 in Döbern; † June 25, 1960) .

Origin and education

Germanus Theiss, who comes from an old family of glassmakers from what was then West Prussia , attended the two-class elementary school in Karwen near Schwarz Damerkow until 1881 . Before that he had already lived in Lomnitz, Gleiwitz and Zechlinerhütte with his parents, who had to keep looking for new job opportunities .

In Karwen he began to work as a glassmaker's assistant for his father. In 1887 he went to Moritzdorf north of Dresden with his parents and relatives . Here he was appointed foreman. In 1888 the entire family settled in the glassworks town of Döbern , where everyone hoped to find a permanent livelihood.

work life

Germanus Theiß worked again in the Fettke & Ziegler hollow glass works as his father's assistant. At the end of 1889 he took over a vacant workshop of a master glassmaker, which he incomprehensibly had to give up after two years of flawless work. It was not until 1895 that he got this position back with all rights and held it until 1920. From then on he worked as a smelter. In 1931 he was dismissed by Fettke & Ziegler for reasons of age.

At the suggestion of his youngest son Konrad (founded Konrad Theiss Verlag Aalen in 1956 , later Stuttgart), he wrote a description of his life in retirement and an extensive family chronicle from 1935 to 1943. Many decades later this resulted in an interesting work, which was repeatedly published as a book under the titles New Glass and Old Faith or Memoirs of the Glassmaker Germanus Theiss .

Activity in the community

Germanus Theiss, married and father of six children, took an extremely active and often leading role in social life in Döbern. In 1889 he joined the men's choir Germania , the following year the men's gymnastics club, and later the shooting club. He co-founded the Wanderer cyclists 'association in 1892 , the Gau 22 Cottbus of the DRB (1893) and in 1900 a Catholic workers' association which was primarily committed to the establishment of a Catholic school and church. They were built in 1902 and 1905.

Germanus Theiss founded the charitable workers 'association of the Fettke & Ziegler company in 1913 , was elected to the workers' council in 1918 and also served as chairman of his company. From 1924 to 1929 he was the community representative of Döbern for the United Economic Party.

On the day after the Reichstag election of March 1933, as the teller in the town hall, he openly expressed doubts that the high percentage of votes for the NSDAP could be the correct result. He received a sharp reprimand.

Honor

In 2002 the small town of Döbern, the place where Germanus Theiss worked, was able to look back on 125 years of school history. On this occasion, the previous comprehensive school 2 was given the name Oberschule Germanus Theiss .
