Gernot Gutmann

Gernot Karl Gutmann (born November 26, 1929 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German economist and former rector of the University of Cologne .

Life

At the end of the Second World War, Gernot Gutmann was still a combatant at the age of 15. After returning from captivity , he graduated from high school in 1949 and studied economics at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg from 1951 to 1954 . In 1956, with a thesis on the development of services in Rhine shipping and its management through freight formation in Freiburg, he became a Dr. rer. pole. PhD . After research assistants in Freiburg (1956), Marburg (1957/1958) and with the economist Karl Paul Hensel , he qualified as a professor in 1963 with the thesis “Theory and Practice of Monetary Planning in Central Administration. Writings on the comparison of economic systems ”; he received the venia legendi for economics at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1965 he became department head of the research center for the comparison of economic control systems.

In 1970 he was appointed professor of economics , economic theory and theoretical economic policy and director of the political science seminar at the University of Marburg.

In 1971 Gutmann moved to the chair for political economics at the University of Cologne , and also director of the political science seminar in Cologne. Gutmann was engaged in other management positions at the university, as director of the economic archive (1974–1978), on the board of directors of the Federal Institute for Eastern and International Studies (1978–86), dean of the economics and social science faculty (1982–1983) and as rector at the University of Cologne from 1983 to 1985. In 1995 he retired .

Act

Gutmann's research focus was on economic order theories and policy as well as the comparison of economic systems. He has published numerous papers.

Gernot Gutmann was involved in numerous national scientific initiatives. From 1978 to 1986, in addition to his commitment in Cologne, he was a board member of the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council in Marburg. From 1985 to 1993 he was executive director of the Berlin research center for pan-German economic and social issues. From 1987 to 1991 he was also president of the Verein für Socialpolitik . He was a member of the German UNESCO Commission from 1988 to 1992.

In 1991 he was appointed the founding dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Leipzig and built up teaching there until 1993; his successor was Bert Rürup . He was a long-time guest lecturer at the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia ( Bulgaria ), at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University in Bishkek ( Kyrgyzstan ) and the University of Omsk ( Russia ).
