Gerolf Steiner (born March 22, 1908 in Strasbourg , Alsace ; † August 14, 2009 ), pseudonyms : Harald Stümpke and Hararuto Shutyunpuke , was a German zoologist , university lecturer and author.

Life

Steiner received his doctorate in 1931 from the University of Heidelberg . He completed his habilitation in 1942 at the Technical University of Darmstadt and in 1947 at the University of Heidelberg, where he was appointed adjunct professor two years later . In 1962 he became associate professor and in 1966 full professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe .

Steiner became known worldwide through the book Construction and Life of Rhinogradentia , in which, inspired by Christian Morgenstern's Nasobēm , he described the anatomy and habits of the Rhinogradentia , a fictional order of mammals . His book, intended as a scientific joke , was published in 1961 under the pseudonym Prof. Dr. Harald Stümpke , where he was named as an illustrator under his real name.

In 1962 the translation into French took place, the book was published by a renowned French specialist book publisher, which was acknowledged with some smiles. The English translation appeared in 1967. This joke is still being expanded today, and a new edition of his book was published in 2006.

When a publisher asked if Steiner had anything similar to Rhinogradentia, he informed him in August 1966: “In the same way as the Rhinogradentier I have nothing in store and I can't do anything similar, because that's just a second, diluted infusion would; and that's just bland. Besides - as I wrote to you at the time - I am not a writer for professional humor, but simply a zoologist and university professor, that is, what one should call "a serious man." My seriousness only has limits insofar as I like to draw and work accordingly on evenings, weekends and holidays. ”At the same time, he offered the publisher the opportunity to publish the drawings he made on notepad at meetings. A publisher had previously rejected the publication, and there was no deal here either.
