Gerrit (Johannes) Herlyn (born July 20, 1909 in Midlum (Rheiderland) , † October 4, 1992 in Leer) was a German Reformed pastor and Low German author.

Life

On the paternal side, the Herlyn family's origins can be traced back to the early 15th century. In the 16th century, some family members joined the Calvinist faith. Claude Herlin fled Antwerp around 1585 and moved to Bremen with his family. From there the family spread, whose descendants can be found today mainly in Germany, the Netherlands and the USA, which is why Herlin, Heerlien or Heerlijn also appear as the family name. Some family members moved from Bremen to Emden, Visquard and Delfzijl in the 17th century. At the Visquard church from 1654 Philipp Herlin worked as a reformed pastor, to whom all bearers of the name "Herlyn" go back. On the maternal side, Gerrit Herlyn is descended from Wilhelmina Arendina Immer, a sister of Karl Immanuel Immer , whose family is one of the Salzburg exiles . Her ancestors fled Salzburg to East Prussia in 1731 and moved to East Friesland at the beginning of the 20th century .

After studying theology in Bethel , Erlangen , Zurich , Tübingen , Kampen (Netherlands) and Bonn , Gerrit Herlyn passed his first theological exam in Aurich in 1934 and his second theological exam in Twixlum in 1936. Herlyn became assistant preacher in Vienna, where he was ordained in 1937. In January 1938 he returned to his East Frisian homeland and became pastor of the Protestant Reformed church in Ihrerfeld ( Westoverledingen ), interrupted by military service and imprisonment in Russia. In the Third Reich, Herlyn belonged to that part of the Confessing Church that defended the traditional biblical faith against German Christians and Nazi ideologues, but at the same time were loyal followers of Adolf Hitler. He also used the so-called German greeting within the church.

From 1952 until his retirement in 1976 he was pastor in Leer, where he died in 1992. During his term of office in Leer, he was a member of the regional synod and the regional church council of the Evangelical Reformed Church as well as the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany . From 1959 to 1971 he was head of the Diakonisches Werk der Ev.-ref. Churches. For over forty years he was the editor of the ev.-ref. Sunday paper.

He became known nationwide through his Low German stories and devotions, which he presented and published at public readings and on the radio. His services in the Low German language were popular. Herlyn translates the entire New Testament and some of the Psalms into Low German.

At first he worked for the High German-Low German dictionary of Otto Buurman , he finally became its editor. Apart from his time as a soldier and imprisonment, from 1938 to 1979 he was editor of the Sunday paper for Evangelical Reformed congregations . As editor he supported Hitler's predatory war, celebrated the attack on Poland as a brilliant armed act and appealed to the Heidelberg Catechism for the failure of the assassination attempt on Hitler in 1939, which he welcomed.
