Gerrit Wustmann

Gerrit Wustmann (born 1982 in Lindenthal (Cologne) ) is a German publicist and poet . He became known for a cycle of poems that deal with contemporary Istanbul in three volumes .

Life

Gerrit Wustmann studied oriental studies , history and political science in Cologne and Bonn. Since 2001 he has published poetry and prose in anthologies, literary magazines and individual titles. His poems have been translated into English, Italian, Turkish and Persian. Wustmann has received several grants , including from the Kunststiftung NRW and the state of NRW . He lives in Kerpen as a freelance journalist, translator and writer . For Die Tageszeitung and Friday he writes u. a. about literature and the situation of authors in Turkey. In the series slow motion - essays from "Europe in crisis" of the radio broadcaster WDR3 he tells "stories from the Rhenish province". Together with the KulturForum TurkeyGermany , he founded the series of events “Voices of Freedom”, which aims to draw attention to the fate of writers and journalists imprisoned in Turkey.

In 2010 Wustmann began working on an Istanbul trilogy, which he completed in 2015. The three volumes of poetry in German and Turkish with the titles Beyoğlu Blues , Istanbul Bootleg and Taksim Tango are lyrical forays into the Turkish metropolis and the current history of the city. With the help of a grant from the City of Cologne, he spent three months in 2012 in the artist house “Atelier Galata” in Istanbul , Cologne's twin city. The jury selected him because his poems in the first volume, Beyoğlu Blues, “have long since deeply and prudently captured the spirit of Istanbul”. In the same year he was awarded the postpoetry.NRW poetry prize for his poem zaman / zeit . The second volume, Istanbul Bootleg , which was published together with a bilingual audio book, was discussed by Martin Becker for Deutschlandfunk Kultur . He emphasized the very musical language of the lyrics. The chapters are headed with terms from record production such as demo tapes , B-sides , remixes and bootlegs . “The audio book takes up this thought and contributes to the musical form of Istanbul Bootleg .” In Wustmann's poems you can trace the everyday life of a stranger in the city. He creates images that are memorable. For all the longing that spoke from them, he did not create a transfigured picture of the Istanbul of the present. He also shows the “dirty corners” in his texts, for example when he recalls politically persecuted or ostracized Turkish artists in a poem. “But it happens quietly and delicately, like all the texts in this audio book are extremely gentle .” The cycle of poems was also published in Turkey under the title Istanblues .

In 2011 Wustmann published an anthology with Persian poetry in German-speaking countries. According to his foreword, it includes authors who write in Persian and / or German in German-speaking countries as well as works by poets who write in German in Iran.
