Contract league football, 1961 to 1976

At the age of 18, the son of the two-time Gauliga champion (1939, 1942) Josef Brunnhuber made his debut on October 15, 1961 at FC Schweinfurt 05 in the Oberliga Süd. He acted as a left wing runner in the World Cup system practiced at the time . The zero five lost with players like Günter Bernard (goalkeeper), Erwin Aumeier and Heinz Krämer with 1: 2 at Karlsruher SC. When the era of the first-class Oberliga Süd ended with the game on April 28, 1963 with a 1: 5 away defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg for Schweinfurt, Gert Brunnhuber also belonged to the team from Lower Franconia; he had formed the runner row at the “Club” together with Krämer and Rolf Kupfer . In the last two rounds of the old first-class Oberliga Süd, he had completed 26 league appearances and scored one goal. Schweinfurt was not accepted into the new Bundesliga from the 1963/64 season and Brunnhuber and colleagues therefore competed in the second-rate Regionalliga Süd from that point on.

In the first two years in the new regional league football, 1963 to 1965, Brunnhuber made 25 appearances and the zero fives played a weak round, especially in the second season, 1964/65, with the 15th place. In the 1966 world championship year , Schweinfurt surprisingly celebrated the championship in the Regionalliga Süd ahead of the toughest competitor for the title, Kickers Offenbach, with newcomer Manfred Berz from FC Schalke 04. Coach Gunther Baumann had led the team to this success and the other offensive players Kurt Dachlauer , Günter Masurek , Manfred Rühr and Rolf Schweighöfer were guarantors for the goals for entry into the Bundesliga promotion round. On the defensive, it was mainly Winfried Böhm (goalkeeper), Karl-Jürgen Lang, Robert Gehling, Werner Rumpel, Krämer and Kupfer who ensured order. Brunnhuber himself came due to illnesses and injuries only on November 20, 1965 in a 1: 3 away defeat at VfR Mannheim to a round use. In the promotion round to the Bundesliga, however, he represented his club in four games against RW Essen (0: 3; 1: 2), FC St. Pauli (1: 3) and 1. FC Saarbrücken (0: 0) in June 1966.

Last year, 1973/74, the zero five took 15th place. They were thus qualified for the new 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season. In the second half of the season, former league player Walter Lang replaced the hapless coach Fritz Schollmeyer in February 1974. Overall, Brunnhuber is led with 247 league appearances and nine goals in the Regionalliga Süd from 1963 to 1974.

In the debut year of the new Bundesliga foundation, 1974/75 , Schweinfurt experienced a significant improvement in performance under coach István Sztani . With the regular midfield line-up Horst Raubold , Willi Rodekurth and Harald Aumeier as well as the three-way attack with Rainer Skrotzki (27-6), Werner Seubert (28-16) and Lothar Emmerich (30-16), Schweinfurt finished third on points with runner-up FK Pirmasens. Brunnhuber had played all 38 league games and led the defensive together with Wolfgang Dramsch (goalkeeper) and Wolfram Thaumüller. The six draws in their own stadium resulted in a home defeat to 30: 8 home points, compared to 30: 4 each of the competition from Karlsruher SC and Pirmasens and ultimately decided the race for the first two places. In the away games Schweinfurt was ahead with 18:20 against 16:22 for KSC and 14:24 for FK Pirmasens.

In the following round, 1975/76, Schweinfurt was relegated to the amateur camp as 18th. Under coach Peter Velhorn (7 / 75-2 / 76) and Gunther Baumann (2 / 76-6 / 76) Brunnhuber had completed another 30 games. With his appearance on matchday 38, June 13, 1976, five weeks before his 33rd birthday, in the home game against FSV Frankfurt, the veteran said goodbye to licensed football with a 3-0 win. After 15 rounds of activity in the 1st team of Schweinfurt 05, Brunnhuber ended his career as a contract or licensed footballer after a total of 345 competitive appearances (excluding cup games) with 12 goals in the summer of 1976.
