Gert Cornelius Nel

Gert Cornelius Nel (born April 6, 1885 in Greytown , Natal , † February 16, 1950 in Stellenbosch ) was a South African botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Nel ".

Live and act

Gert Cornelius Nel defended his dissertation on February 11, 1914 in Berlin under Adolf Engler and Gottlieb Haberlandt . With special consideration of the African plant species, he dealt with the plant families of the Amaryllis family and Hypoxidaceae . He provided numerous first descriptions of species from the genera Forbesia , Janthe , Hypoxis and Rhodohypoxis .

From 1921 to 1950 he was professor of botany at the University of Stellenbosch . Adolar Gottlieb Julius Herre (1895–1979), curator of the university, aroused his interest in succulent plants.

In 1946, Nel published the first book on the plant genus Lithops .

Honor taxon

Gustav Schwantes named in his honor the genre Nelia from the plant family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae).
