Nelia is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the South African botanist Gert Cornelius Nel .

description

The plants of the genus Nelia grow compactly with up to 40 branches (but usually fewer), each of which has 2 to 3 pairs of leaves. The yellowish to green leaves are triangular and very smooth. They are 15 to 20 millimeters long and 5 to 12 millimeters wide and thick. Your epidermis has a thick outer wall that is filled with crystal sand.

In a zymösen inflorescence with bracts and bracteoles are one to three flowers . The single flower stays open for up to three weeks and reaches a diameter of 14 to 22 millimeters. There are five sepals . The spread out outer petals are almost as long as the sepals. Towards the inside, the petals become upright, thread-like staminodes , the innermost ones of which are bent over the gynoeceum in the middle. All the petals are fused together at the base and form a flat flower cup . The nectarium is designed as a ring.

The five-faceted capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Dracophilus . They have wide flaps, no locking bodies and a reduced fan cover. The smooth, pear-shaped seeds are light brown and 1 to 1.4 millimeters long and 0.6 to 0.95 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Nelia is common in the north of the South African Namaqualand . The plants grow on slopes or plains containing quartzite. The amount of precipitation in winter is about 125 millimeters.

The genus was first described in 1928 by Gustav Schwantes . The holotype is Nelia pillansii . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Nelia includes the following species:
