Gertrud Buchenrieder

Gertrud Buchenrieder (born January 4, 1964 in Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German expert on social research in developing countries, especially in Africa , she is a professor for development economics and policy at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich .

Live and act

After graduating from the commercial high school in Bad Säckingen , Buchenrieder studied general agricultural sciences, specializing in economics and social sciences at the University of Hohenheim (1984 to 1987) and after an additional study abroad at the Ohio State University , Columbus, USA, obtained a Master of Science in 1989, which in Germany was recognized as a graduate economist.

After an internship at the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) (1988) and a research stay in Shaba , Republic of Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo ), several study visits followed at Ohio University and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington, DC , USA.

The doctorate to Dr. agr. at the University of Hohenheim took place in 1994. After that, Buchenrieder received an HSP-II scholarship (funding of female scientists worthy of a habilitation) and in 1996 the JG Knoll Science Award from the Father and Son Eiselen Foundation Ulm.

This was followed by research stays at Boston University , School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Boston, USA as well as Hanoi Agricultural University , Hanoi, Vietnam and Chiang Mai University , Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The habilitation in the subject "Development and Agricultural Policy" took place in 2002 at the University of Hohenheim with a subsequent private lectureship. The appointment as professor for "Politics and Institutions of the Agricultural Sector" and for "Economic and Social Policy of Agriculture" at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) took place in 2006. At the same time, Buchenrieder headed the Leibniz Institute for 2006-2010 Agricultural Development Transformation Economies (IAMO), Department “Framework Conditions for the Agricultural Sector and Policy Analysis”.

From 2010 to 2012 Buchenrieder was visiting professor for “Politics and Development Outside the OECD World” at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, in 2013 for “International Political Economy at the Central European University of Skalica in Skalica , Slovakia and from 2014 to 2017 as a professor for“ Agriculture - and the food industry ”as a substitute professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Buchenrieder accepted the call to the Bundeswehr University in Munich for development economics and policy in 2019 and has worked there ever since.
