The law on the practice of dentistry (ZHG) came into force on March 31, 1952 and was last amended by the law on the improvement of the determination and recognition of professional qualifications acquired abroad of December 6, 2011. The law stipulated in 1952 that the practice of dentistry is reserved only for dentists (and doctors) and requires a university degree with a license to practice medicine .

Definition of the job description

The Dentistry Act defines the nature of the dental profession, the concept of the practice of dentistry, the requirements for the profession of dentist and the provisions on the dental license: granting, withdrawal, revocation, suspension and waiver. In addition, it authorizes the Federal Government , with the consent of the Federal Council, to set a schedule of fees for dentists . The dentist profession was integrated and the freedom of couriers abolished. Section 1 (3) ZHG defines the practice of dentistry as the professional diagnosis and treatment of dental, oral and jaw diseases based on dental scientific knowledge. A disease is any appearance of the teeth, mouth and jaws that deviate from the norm, including abnormalities in the position of the teeth and the absence of teeth.

Delegation framework

Section 1 (5) specifies which activities the dentist can perform on qualified prophylaxis staff who have completed their training such as dental assistants (ZMA), trained dental assistants (dental assistants), dental prophylaxis assistants (ZMP), dental assistants (ZMF) or dental hygienists ( ZMF). Work permit

According to § 13 ZHG, people who do not have a German license to practice medicine can apply for a temporary professional license to practice dentistry in a non-executive position.
