It also occurs in the Mediterranean , where it is now rare.

features

The striped eagle ray with its long, whip-like tail reaches a maximum length of 2.50 meters and a maximum weight of 83 kg, but usually stays at a length of 1.50 meters. Its long, flattened and rounded snout is vaguely reminiscent of a duck's bill, which is why it is often called a duck-billed ray . The upper and lower jaws are covered with seven rows of flat teeth. The head is large, the wing-like, large pectoral fins end in rounded tips. Striped eagle rays are green-brown to light brown on the upper side with 7 to 8, more rarely 9 light blue-gray stripes. The ventral side is white. The head, torso and pectoral fins create a diamond-like body profile. A caudal fin is missing. While the primitive guitar fish , as well as the sawfish and the jitter Roche-like move around like most sharks by strain snaking of the body and the tail fin and the genuine rays get around by undulating movements of their large pectoral fins, Striped strike eagle rays as all the other eagle rays like birds with their wings with the enlarged pectoral fins.

Way of life

The striped eagle ray lives alone near the coast, sometimes in small groups. It feeds mainly on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and molluscs . Like all eagle rays, it is ovoviviparous . The three to seven young rays are born in autumn.
