The Ordinary coneflower ( Rudbeckia fulgida ), also Brilliant sun and Yellow Sun called, is a species within the genus of Rudbeckia ( Rudbeckia ) in the family of Korbblütengewächse (Asteraceae).

description

The common coneflower is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 100 centimeters. The plant forms short underground runners ( stolons ), at the ends of which there are evergreen rosettes. The stems grow branched. Stems and leaves are hairy or hairless, but not very rough or protruding, pungent, bristly. The alternate leaves are simple; they are arranged in basal rosettes and along the upright stems. The leaf margins are smooth or serrated. The basal leaves are three-nerved (rarely up to five-nerved), ovate-lanceolate and serrated. The stem leaves are sessile, half-stem-encompassing, toothed and three-veined.

The golden yellow, cup-shaped inflorescence with a dark brown center is reminiscent of a broad-brimmed hat. The flower heads have a diameter of up to 7 centimeters and are usually single or in pairs to seven on the stems. The tips of the chaff are not sticky gray-haired. The inflorescence base is domed. They contain 10 to 15 ray florets and 50 to over 500 tubular florets (disc florets). The ray florets are 15 to 40 millimeters long, 3 to 6 millimeters and yellow to orange in color. The tubular flowers have a length of 12 to 16 millimeters and a diameter of 10 to 18 millimeters. The stylus branches are about 1.3 millimeters long.

The 2.2 to 4 millimeter large achenes have a small (0.2 millimeter), crown-shaped pappus .

The flowering period extends from August to October.

Occurrence

The common coneflower is found in the warm to temperate eastern United States in humid, light forests, sedge meadows, limestone spring meadows and river marshes.
