Gheorghe Dinică (born January 1, 1934 in Bucharest ; † November 10, 2009 there ) was a Romanian actor .

Life

Dinică played theater since he was 17, initially in various amateur theater groups. From 1957 he completed a professional acting training at the Institutul Național de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică București in Bucharest. In 1961 he completed his training there with a diploma as an actor.

Dinică worked as a stage actor at the beginning of his career. He had various theater engagements. He made his stage debut in 1961 as Inspector Goole in the play An Inspector Comes by John B. Priestley . From 1961 to 1967 he played at the Teatrul de Comedie in Bucharest and from 1968 to 1969 also in Bucharest at the Teatrul Bulandra. From 1972 he was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Teatrul Național IL Caragiale in Bucharest. In 2002 he was made an honorary member of the theater.

As a theatrical actor, Dinică played a wide repertoire , which included plays by William Shakespeare , the great Russian playwrights such as Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky , but in particular also the pieces of modernism and contemporary theater. Among the playwrights of the 20th century, he played plays by Eugène Ionesco , Samuel Beckett , Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Brian Friel . In Romania he gained particular fame through his participation in the play Take, Ianke și Cadâr , a Romanian comedy by Victor Ion Popa from 1933 about the friendship of three men: a Christian, a Jew and a Turkish Muslim.

Guest appearances as a theater actor have taken him to Paris , Belgrade , Venice , Florence and Israel, among others .

Dinică played in almost 80 films and appeared in numerous television and radio programs. He mastered a wide range of roles, including villains, shady politicians and defiant Romanian gypsies .

In 1963 he made his film debut in Mihai Iacob's Romanian production Străinul , a film adaptation of Albert Camus' novel The Stranger . Numerous roles followed in almost all film genres, in thrillers , period films, war films, melodramas and crime films. He starred with Stuart Whitman in the 1976 action film The Devil's Prodigal Sons ( The Nest of the Salamanders ). In the French television film L'homme pressé , he took on the role of Zacharie Regencrantz in 2005 alongside Anthony Delon and Mathilda May . In recent years Dinică has played in the Romanian telenovelas Inimă de țigan (Heart of a Gypsy) and Regina, among others . His last television role was as the aging reserve general Grigorie Vulturesco in the Romanian television series Aniela .

He was often referred to as the Romanian Robert De Niro because of his resemblance to the American actor.

Dinică also emerged as a musician and singer. In the tradition of Maria Tănase , he interpreted Romanian folk songs, love songs and chansons. These were also published on CD.

Dinică has received several theater and film awards for his artistic work. Among other things, he received the film award of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the “Best Actor” category (for his role in Prin cenușa imperiului ). He was awarded the Romanian order Serviciul Credincios . Most recently, he received an honorary doctorate from the Universitatea Națională de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică in Bucharest in 2008 . Dinică was also made an honorary citizen of the city of Bucharest.

Dinică suffered from various chronic diseases for many years. In 2007 he had to undergo a long hospital stay in Târgovişte . He was also beginning to show signs of Alzheimer's disease . Nevertheless, Dinică continued his work as an actor until shortly before his death.

Because of pneumonia , Dinică had been in inpatient intensive care since October 2009. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 75 in the Spitalul Clinic de Urgențǎ Floreasca in Bucharest.
