Emperor Gia Long ( Hán tự : 嘉隆 ; * February 8, 1762 in Huế ; † February 3, 1820 ibid) was the founder and first emperor of the Vietnamese Nguyễn dynasty , he held this office from June 1, 1802 until his death. His real name was Nguyễn Phúc Ánh ( 阮 福 映 , also 阮 福 暎 ), or Nguyễn Ánh ( 阮 映 ) for short , or Nguyễn Phúc Chủng ( 阮 福 種 ), he chose Gia Long as the name of the era .

In the civil war that followed the Tây-Sơn rebellion in 1777, the Tây-Sơn dynasty occupied the entire land of the Nguyễn. Nguyễn Phúc Ánh fled to Siam as the only survivor of the Nguyễn dynasty and asked the local king for help. He returned with Siamese troops but was defeated and had to flee again as the civil war continued.

In 1800 Nguyễn Phúc Ánh conquered the Tây Sơn fortress in Quy Nhơn, not without the help of the French, and in 1801 Phú Xuân (near Huế ), the capital of the Tây Sơn. In 1802 he defeated Quang Trung's son Quang Tuản and many Tây-Sơn generals in Thăng Long (today's Hanoi ). With that he had won the war and declared himself Gia Long (嘉隆auspicious and wealthy ) emperor, the first of the Nguyễn dynasty , under the acronym (niên hiệu 年號) . Note here that the first sign of Era designator identical to the Jiaqing is -Kaisers of China嘉慶, certainly not a coincidence.

Under his rule, the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia became vassal states of Vietnam after campaigns .

In 1804 Gia Long moved the capital to Huế.

The name " Việt Nam " originated on the initiative of Gia Long: In 1802 he asked the Chinese Jiāqìng emperor for permission to rename the country from Đại Việt 大 越 to Nam Việt 南越. However, he rearranged the two syllables to Việt Nam 越南 in order to avoid confusion with the old kingdom of Nam Việt under Triệu Đà Zh (Zhào Tuó), as this empire comprised part of what later became southern China.
