Gia Machavariani (born February 26, 1985 in Kharagauli / Georgia) is a Georgian weightlifter . He became in 2011 Vice European Champion and finished at the Olympic Games in 2012 to fourth place in the heavyweight division .

Career

Gia Machavariani has been participating in international weightlifting championships since 2004. At the first international championship in which he took part, the European Championship in Kiev, he finished 20th in the middle heavyweight division with a duel of 342.5 kg (160-182.5). At the Junior World Championships 2005 (U 20) in Busan, he was unlucky, because after mastering 165 kg in the snatch, he made three failed attempts in the jerk, which meant that he remained in the heavyweight division without a duel and could not place. At the European Junior Championships in Trencin in October 2005, his progress was clearly visible. He increased there in the heavyweight division to 382 kg (175-207), with which he narrowly missed the medal ranks with 4th place.

At the 2006 World Cup in Santo Domingo, he continued to improve. He achieved there in a duel 397 kg (180-217). With this achievement he finished 7th in the heavyweight division. World champion was Marcin Dolega from Poland, who came to 415 kg (193-222). At the 2007 World Cup in Chiang Mai / Thailand, Gia Machavariani was nowhere near the performance of 2006. He achieved there, with only one valid attempt in snatching and pushing, in a duel 365 kg (165-200) and only came in 21st place.

In 2008 Gio Machavariani did not take part in any international championships and in 2009 and 2010 he stagnated. At the European Championships in Bucharest in 2009 he reached, again with only two valid attempts, in a duel 391 kg (180-211) and thus reached 6th place. At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang, he lifted 390 kg (180-210) in a duel, although he only managed two valid attempts here. He came in 7th place in Goyang. At the 2010 World Championships in Antalya he came in 8th place with 390 kg (180-210).

Gia Machavariani was significantly better at the 2011 European Championships in Kazan. He achieved there in the heavyweight 400 kg (183-217) and won three European silver medals with these performances. The winner Chadschimurat Akkajew from Russia, who came to 425 kg (195-230), he could not endanger. At the 2011 World Cup in Paris, he was able to improve further. He achieved 409 kg in a duel in Paris (187–222) and looked like the sure bronze medalist, but was finally relegated to the ungrateful 4th place by Oleksij Torochtij from Ukraine, who hit 229 kg. A small consolation for Gia Machavariani was that he won a World Cup bronze medal with his performance in the tear.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the conditions for winning a medal were actually extremely favorable for Gia Machavariani, because surprisingly none of the strong Russian weightlifters competed in the heavyweight division. He could not meet these expectations, however, because after a mediocre performance in the snap with 185 kg, he made two failed attempts with 220 kg in the push. In the third attempt he still increased to 225 kg because if he had managed this weight he would have won the Olympic bronze medal. But this attempt also failed and Gia Machavariani remained unplaced without a duel.

After London he ended his active weightlifting career. In 2013 he applied for the post of head coach at the Georgian Weightlifting Association, but did not get a chance.
