Akkayev already appeared internationally as a teenager. In 2000 he was able to win gold in a duel at the European Youth Championships in Košice in the weight class up to 76 kg with 297.5 kg (135.0 / 162.5 kg). A year later he already achieved 330.0 kg (150.0 kg / 180.0 kg) in the light-heavy weight up to 85 kg at the same event. At the Junior World Championships 2003 in Hermosillo Akkajew got competition for the first time and finished second with 370.0 kg (170.0 / 200.0 kg) in the middle-heavy weight category up to 94 kg. In this weight class Akkayev stayed for the next six years.

In the 2004 Olympic year, Akkayev competed for the last time at a Junior World Championship and was able to recommend himself with 400.0 kg (185.0 / 215.0 kg) in a duel for the Olympic Games in Athens, where he weighed 405.0 kg ( 185.0 / 220.0 kg) lived up to expectations and took second place behind Milen Dobrew , who lifted 407.5 kg, and in front of his compatriot Eduard Tjukin , who achieved 397.5 kg.

Without having contested an international competition after his first doping ban , Akkayev entered again doped at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Here he came in third place behind the also doped Kazak Ilya Ilyin and the Pole Szymon Kołecki . In the actual medal fight, however, Akkayev could not intervene because his coaches decided to let him start in the B group of the event.

In 2010, Akkayev started for the first time at a European Senior Championship. In Minsk he could not bring in a valid attempt in the snatch and then ended his competition. Since then, Akkayev has competed in a local competition with a body weight of 102.6 kg in the heavyweight category up to 105 kg and achieved 425.0 kg (195.0 / 230.0 kg) in his new weight class.

Repeat doping offenders

Akkayev had already tested positive in 2005 and was banned by the IMF until 2007 . However, the athlete remained unimpressed and also entered the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with doping. This came to light during extensive follow-up tests that took place in 2016. In November 2016, the Olympic medal from Beijing, he was denied .
