Giacomo Conti (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giacomo Conti (born May 24, 1754 in Milan , † January 24, 1805 in Vienna ) was an Italian violinist and composer .

Life

Giacomo Conti, who is often confused with the castrato Gioacchino Conti (1714–1761), was first mentioned in 1779 as an opera conductor in Varese . A performance as a violin soloist in Zurich is documented for 1786, after which he conducted operas again in various cities in northern Italy. In the late 1780s he traveled to Russia, where he was in the service of the tsar and the imperial prince Grigori Alexandrovich Potjomkin , as he noted on the title page of his sonatas op. From 1791 Conti lived in Vienna, where he conducted Italian operas with moderate success. In 1797 he was accepted into the Vienna court orchestra and was also "violin master" with Moritz Reichsgraf von Fries .

Conti's violin works are technically interesting; melodically, he was often inspired by operas of his time. Alessandro Rolla was probably one of his students .
