Giovanni Battista Piazzetta
Giovanni Battista Piazzetta , also called Giambattista Piazzetta and Giambattista Valentino Piazzetta , (born February 13, 1682 in Venice , † April 28, 1754 ibid) was an Italian painter and etcher of the Baroque and Rococo .
He is considered one of the most respected Venetian artists of the 18th century , especially his genre scenes , as well as religious and mystical motifs were trend-setting for the Venetian painting of the Settecento. Typical of the artist is his strong chiaroscuro ( chiaroscuro ( chiaroscuro ), which is reminiscent of the Caravaggists of the early 17th century, but was unusual for its time.
Years of apprenticeship
The young Piazzetta's first teacher was his father Giacomo Piazzetta, a wood carver and sculptor in Venice. At the age of 21, around 1703, Piazzetta traveled to Bologna . Here he learned from Giuseppe Maria Crespi and finally entered his workshop. In addition to his teachers Crespi and Antonio Molinari , Piazzetta's apprenticeship years were characterized by studying the works of Caravaggio and Guercino . In 1711, Piazzetta returned to Venice.
Settecento
Piazzetta is considered to be the most important representative of the Venetian Settecento, painting of the 18th century . Other important artists of this era such as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi were significantly influenced by Piazzetta's work, albeit without adopting his tenebrism .
