Gianni Amico
Giovanni Battista Amico , (* 27. December 1933 in Loano , † 2. November 1990 in Rome ) was an Italian documentary director , film director , screenwriter and creative artists.
Life
In 1960 Amelio founded the Rassegna Internazionale del Cinema Latinoamericano di Santa Margherita Ligure with the Jesuit priest Angelo Arpa , which promoted the important representatives of the "new wave" of South American film such as Glauber Rocha , Fernando Birri , Nelson Pereira dos Santos , Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and um sought the end of Cuba's diplomatic isolation. For almost four years he organized the activities of the initiative. Even after moving to Rome, he worked for cultural organizations; now the Mostra Internazionale del Cinema Libero di Porretta Terme and the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema di Pesaro , of which he was a member of the selection committee in 1966 and 1967.
During these years he also worked on scripts for films by Roberto Rossellini and Bernardo Bertolucci and, from 1964 onwards, was repeatedly responsible for self-directing documentaries, including Giovani brasiliani (1967), shot in Brazil for RAI, and Ah! Vem o samba . Later he added screenplays for films by Bertolucci and Glauber Rocha again, and worked as an assistant director to Jean-Luc Godard .
In the 1970s he continued his work for the RAI, but now also made feature films himself. In 1983 he organized the Bahia de todos os sambas music festival in Rome , which he held in the Circus Maximus and with performances by well-known Brazilian musicians such as Gilberto Gil , Caetano Veloso , Gal Costa , Naná Vasconcelos and João Gilberto . Until his death, further documentaries were made under his direction.
The day before his death, he married his long-time partner Fiorella Giovanelli .
