Gianni Celati

Gianni Celati (born January 10, 1937 in Sondrio ) is an Italian writer and translator . He lives in Brighton in the south of England and in Bologna .

Life

After studying English at the University of Bologna, Celati completed his doctorate with a dissertation on James Joyce . Italo Calvino , editor at Einaudi Verlag , was so taken with a shorter publication by Celati that he published several of his novels from 1971 onwards . In 1975 Celati became a lecturer in English and American literature at the University of Bologna. As early as 1980, he finally said goodbye to the academic world to turn to writing and film work.

Celati has translated numerous authors into Italian, including Jonathan Swift , Mark Twain , Roland Barthes and the novel Ulysses by James Joyce . He always takes years for his dense and fantastic stories . He preferably addresses modern living conditions and chooses in particular “lateral thinkers”, bon vivants and vagabonds as protagonists in his stories.
