Gianni Montanari (born March 23, 1949 in Piacenza , Italy ) is an Italian science fiction writer, translator and editor.

Life

Montanari studied English and graduated with Ieri il futuro in 1977 . Origini e sviluppo della fantascienza inglese , a work on the origin and development of British science fiction. He had been active as an SF writer since 1968 when his first short story Problema di sopravvivenza was published. In 1970 the short story Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam appeared in the anthology Destinazione uomo: Tendenze della SF italiana , edited together with Gianfranco de Turris and Vittorio Curtoni , which was also number 113 of the SF magazine Galassia , of which he was editor alongside Vittorio Curtoni, from 1975 to In 1979 he was the sole editor. Further anthologies followed and from 1986 to 1989 he edited the anthology series Millemondiestate .

He is a representative of the Italian version of the New Wave in science fiction, which is strongly shown in his first novel Nel nome dell'uomo ("In the Name of Man", 1971), in which an impenetrable mist covers the earth , the cause of which remains unknown and also less interested than the psychological effects of such a phenomenon on people, which is demonstrated using the example of five people who live in two houses cut off from the outside world and are confronted with strange shadows flitting through the rooms , breaking windows and suddenly appearing psychic abilities.

Montanari's second novel La sepoltura (1973) is about the appearance of mutants with supernatural abilities, which they cannot control and who are persecuted, locked up and treated inhumanely. After a long period abroad, the protagonist returns to Italy to take revenge on his father, who denounced his mother and drove her to death.

Montanari's third novel, Daimon (1978), has also been translated into German. He acts in a fortress of Labùla , which exists indefinitely between the Middle Ages and the future , in which the whole life is determined by the strict rules of the incomprehensible cult of the eponymous deity Daimon. Master Jockan is the ruler of Labùla, unchallenged, with the exception of the historian Nagal, the guardian of religion, whose secret knowledge eludes Jockan, who in turn is confronted with strange signs and clues and wonders whether he should follow the clues or whether that is heresy. The encounter with an enigmatic creature on a sacred Monteleone tree brings the decision and Jockan decides to explore the unknown outside of Labùla. This decision then leads to a fatal confrontation with Nagal and ultimately to the discovery of the real nature of Daimon. The novel is considered a successful combination of fantasy and new wave science fiction.

Montanari was also the editor of the Science Fiction Book Club (1976–1979) and “Fantapocket” Longanesi (1978–1980) book series and is a prolific translator. His main job is a teacher.
