Gianpaolo Della Chiesa

Gianpaolo Della Chiesa (* 1521 in Tortona ; † January 11, 1575 in Rome ) was an Italian Catholic cardinal .

Life

Gianpaolo Della Chiesa was born in Tortona in 1521. He studied at the University of Padua and the University of Pavia and received his doctorate in both rights . A short time later he moved to Milan and became a famous lawyer there .

He later traveled to Spain , where he defended the grandson of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar , Gonzalo II Fernández de Córdoba, during a court case. The Spanish King Philip II was so impressed by Della Chiesa that he made him Senator of Milan and Podestà of Pavia for two years .

After his wife's death, he was sent to Rome by the Milan Senate to resolve a dispute between the Senate and Cardinal Charles Borromeo . He received praise from the Pope who made him Commendatar Abbot of S. Pietro di Muleggio. He also received a legal clerkship with the Apostolic Signature .

When Pius V became Pope some time later , he offered Gianpaolo Della Chiesa's uncle , Serafino Della Chiesa , the promotion to cardinal. Serafino did not accept the offer and therefore Gianpaolo himself was promoted to this position. He was awarded the Galero on April 5, 1568. On May 3, 1568, he was appointed Prefect of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature . He kept this post until his death. He died on January 11, 1575 in Rome and was buried in his titular church, San Pancrazio .
