Negasso Gidada

Negasso Gidada ( Oromo : Nagaaso Gidaadaa , in Ethiopian script : ነጋሶ ጊዳዳ (transcribed Nägaso Gidada ); born September 8, 1943 in Dembi Dolo , West- Wollega , today in the Oromia region ; † April 27, 2019 ) was an Ethiopian politician . He was president of the country from 1995 to 2001 , and later he was active in the opposition . Negasso Gidada belonged to the Oromo , the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. Since “Gidada” is a patronymic , Negasso is the correct name form.

Negasso Gidada attended elementary school in Dembi Dolo and later high schools in Nazret / Adama and Addis Ababa . Between 1967 and 1971 he studied history at the Haile Selassie I. University in Addis Ababa. He completed his university studies with a master's degree in history and worked for three years as a teacher and school director in western Ethiopia.

In October 1974 he went into exile in Germany . During his stay there, he held various posts and performed numerous tasks. From 1983 to 1985 he taught the Oromo language as a university teacher . He did his doctorate in ethnology and in 1985 became a member of the Third World House eV in Frankfurt am Main . From 1976 to 1981 he was among other things secretary, editor and chairman of all Oromo students in Europe. From 1979 to 1981 he was a member and representative of the Oromo Liberation Front in Europe. From 1986 to 1991 Negasso served as editor, secretary and chairman of the Association of All Oromo in Europe.

In 1989 he became a member of the Democratic Organization of the Oromo People (OPDO) and thus a member of the coalition of the Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples , which was founded in 1991. Negasso returned to Ethiopia in the summer of 1991 and became a member of the central committee of the OPDO. He was appointed Minister of Labor and Social Affairs. He remained in this office until 1992. In the transitional government he was also Minister of Information until he became President on August 22, 1995. As such, he succeeded Meles Zenawi , who in turn became Prime Minister on August 22, 1995 .

Negasso Gidada held the largely symbolic office of president until the end of his term on October 8, 2001.

In the parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 2005 Negasso Gidada was in the constituency Dembi Dolo as an independent candidate in the People's House of Representatives voted. In November 2009, he announced that he had joined the opposition party Unity for Democracy and Justice .

Negasso Gidada was married for the second time. He had two children from his first marriage and an adopted daughter who brought his second wife into the marriage.

Negasso was married to Regina Abelt , a German nurse and midwife. However, she did not appear as "First Lady".

Negasso Gidada died in April 2019 at the age of 75 in Germany, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
