The FFH area Giengener Alb and Eselsburger Tal is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7427-341) registered in 2005 by the Tübingen regional council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) in the German state of Baden- Württemberg . With the ordinance of the regional council of Tübingen on the definition of areas of community importance of November 5, 2018, the protected area was established.

The 991.1 hectare protected area belongs to the natural areas 096 - Albuch and Härtsfeld and 097 - Lonetal -flächealb within the natural spatial main unit 09 - Swabian Alb . It consists of several sub-areas around Giengen and Herbrechtingen and extends over the markings of six cities and municipalities in the Heidenheim district:

Description and purpose of protection

The protected area comprises the landscape of the Brenz and Urbrenz valleys with extensive juniper heaths and limestone grasslands, ravine and hillside mixed forests, wetlands and rock bastions in the river valleys and a large beech forest complex north of Herbrechtingen. There are 53 caves in the area.
