occupation

Gigante is a Uruguayan drama by the Argentinian director Adrián Biniez from 2009. The film, set in Montevideo ( Uruguay ), deals with loneliness and affection. Atmospheric tension is achieved through sparse and often banal-looking dialogues. Scenes from surveillance cameras - some of them distorted - are used as a cinematic stylistic device, creating a realistic staging. The plot is only described from the perspective of one of the two primary protagonists. This perspective emphasizes voyeuristic elements. The dramaturgy leaves room for stalking interpretations, but without illuminating this point of view in more detail or using its clichés. The film is a decelerated, one-sided love story apart from cheap and naive romantic showmanship. The characters seem believable and lovable.

action

The good-natured heavy metal fan Jara monitors the security cameras of a supermarket on shift work. He noticed the cleaning lady Julia. At first he only observes them with the surveillance cameras. He later follows her through the streets of Montevideo in his spare time. Unable to have a conversation with her or to establish communication with her, Jara drapes a potted plant as a present for Julia on her cleaning path through the supermarket - a gesture that she cannot interpret. Jara's increasing fixation on Julia leads to frustration, jealousy and aggression or job loss, which reminds the viewer more of clumsiness. Ultimately, he talks to Julia on the beach. Whether there is a classic happy ending is up to the beholder's eye.

criticism

The film received a positive response in the media. The television broadcaster Arte comments: “The great strengths of the film are the authentic cast with semi-professional actors, the close look at the world of work trained by Aki Kaurismäki , the laconic humor and a script that walks the protagonist on a fine line between threat and shyness leaves."
