Giles Sweit (* 1625 - December 4, 1672 ), also known as Egidius Sweit , Giles Sweet or Swett, was Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford and Dean of Arches .

Life

Sweit studied at Oxford, first at Oriel College , then at St. Mary's Hall. In 1632 he earned his degree in Civil Law. From October 29, 1632 he was admitted as a member of Doctors' Commons . From 1661 to 1664 Sweit was Principal of Alban Hall . In 1661 he was appointed Regius Professor of Civil Law in Oxford, succeeding Richard Zouch . In the same year he followed Zouch in the office of Dean of Arches and was ennobled. For the office of judge he was rewarded with benefices from the parish of Shipton. During his activities as Dean of Arches he was represented in the teaching profession by his later successor Thomas Bouchier .

The date of Sweit's death is unclear. According to Newcourt, he died on September 13, 1672 in his house on Knightrider Street in London. According to Wood and Bliss, Sweit was buried on September 18, 1672 in the church of Barn-elmes, Surrey . Newcourt names Barnes in Surrey as the place of burial . Deviating from this, the Church of England gives the date of death December 4, 1672.
