Francis de Zulueta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francis de Zulueta (born September 12, 1878 in London - † January 16, 1958 ), actually Francisco Maria José de Zulueta, was a lawyer and legal historian. From 1919 to 1948 he was Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford .

Life

Zulueta was a naturalized Briton, but came from Hispanic-Irish ancestors. His father was the Spanish diplomat Pedro de Zulueta, son of the second Count (Conde) of Torre-Diaz, a Spanish businessman in London. His mother was Laura Mary Sheil, daughter of the British Ambassador to Iran , Sir Justin Sheil . Francis was born on September 12, 1878 in the Spanish Embassy in London.

He was an Oxbridge Fellow at All Souls College and a barrister . He was educated at Beaumont College , a Jesuit- run school in Old Windsor , Berkshire , then the Oratory School in Woodcote , Oxfordshire , and then studied Literae Humaniores at New College , Oxford, where he graduated in 1902. After a Price Fellowship at Merton College and a Vinerian Law Scholarship (1903) he was All Souls Reader in Roman Law (1912-1917). In 1919 he was appointed Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford, succeeding Henry Goudy . He was the first Roman Catholic Regius Professor since the Reformation and a leading Catholic figure in Oxford for many years .

Although he was not a fascist , like many Catholic Spaniards of his time, Zulueta supported Franco in the Spanish Civil War . This support earned the highly respected lawyer a bad name at Oxford, where he was portrayed as a fascist aristocrat. This representation contradicts his support of prominent German Jews like Fritz Schulz and David Daube , who developed a deep friendship with Zulueta.

He was a close friend of JRR Tolkien and was the godfather of his daughter Priscilla. He discussed good and bad with Tolkien before the Lord of the Rings . He was a cousin of Cardinal Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val y Zulueta . His son, Philip de Zulueta , became the Foreign Office representative at the Prime Minister's seat, mostly under Harold Macmillan . His grandson is an investment banker in the City of London and a Knight of Malta.

Honors

De Zulueta received honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen ( Legum Doctor , LL.D., 1953) and the University of Paris. He read the David Murray Lectures in 1939. In honor of de Zulueta, a commemorative publication was published by his successor in the Regius Professorship, David Daube ( Studies in the Roman Law of Sale: Dedicated to the Memory of Francis de Zulueta ).
