Griffith Lloyd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Griffith Lloyd († 1586) was head of Jesus College at the University of Oxford from 1572 to 1586 . He was also Regius Professor of Civil Law from 1577 until his death. In 1586, Griffith was elected to the English Parliament for the Cardiganshire constituency (largely identical to modern day Ceredigion ) but died six weeks after the 1586 Parliament opened.

Life

Lloyd was the second son of Hugh ap Llewellyn Llwyd (Lloyd) and his wife Joan. His father was sheriff of the county from 1566 to 1567 and came from the respected Lloyds of Maesyfelin family of Lampeter , Wales . Lloyd's father's brother, David, was also a Member of Parliament in 1545. Lloyd was married to Anne, sister of Elizabeth, the wife of his predecessor in the Regius Professorship Robert Lougher and great niece of Thomas More . According to other, less reliable sources, it was Lougher's daughter. In his will of August 13, 1585, Lloyd bequeathed his lands in Cardiganshire to Jesus College, but only after the death of his widow and daughter in 1615. So he became the first founder of the college.
