John Budden

John Budden or John Boden (* 1566 Canford Magna ; † June 11, 1620 ) was an English lawyer, Regius Professor of Civil Law (1611-1600) and director of Broadgates Hall (1609-1618), later renamed Pembroke College .

Life

John was born in Canford, Dorset , to John Budden. He was in on 29 September 1582 Merton College of the University of Oxford recorded student was at Trinity College on 30 May 1583 his Bachelor of Arts (BA) received on October 29, 1586 Master of Arts (MA) on the 27th June 1589, and Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) and Doctor of Canon Law (DCL) July 8, 1602. At the request of Thomas Allen , he moved in 1587 to Gloucester Hall, which later existed as an annex to St John's College , and dedicated the Civil Law .

Before 1602 he was a reader in philosophy at Magdalen College and director of the New Inn Hall, which is now St Peter's College . In 1611 he took over the Regius Professorship, which had remained vacant for two years after the death of his predecessor Albericus Gentilis , and held it until his death. He had previously represented Gentilis in lectures for some time. He died in Broadgate's Hall on June 11, 1620 and was buried in the neighboring church of St. Aldate.

Services

In 1602 he wrote a biography of Bishop William Waynflete and in 1607 of Archbishop John Morton . The first was published by William Bates and reprinted in 1681 under the title Vitæ selectorum aliquot virorum . Budden translated English works into Latin, for example Thomas Bodley's Statutes of the Public Library and Thomas Smith's Commonwealth of England (1610, further editions 1625 and 1630). He also translated Pierre Ayrault's A Discourse for Parents' Honor and Authority over their Children (London, 1614), which was dedicated to the Archbishop of York, Tobias Matthew , from French into English .
