Gilletiodendron mildbraedii is a plant from the genus Gilletiodendron in the subfamily of caesalpinioideae (Caesalpinioideae) within the family of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae). It is common in central Africa.

description

Appearance and leaf

Gilletiodendron mildbraedii grows as a medium-sized to large tree that reaches heights of 30 to 45 meters and a trunk diameter of 110 centimeters. The trunk is straight and cylindrical with buttress roots up to 6 meters high. The bark is dark gray and rough, the inner bark is reddish or pinkish-brown.

The seedlings germinate epigeously that hypocotyl is 5 to 7 inches long and the epicotyl is 2 to 3 inches long. The primary leaves are arranged opposite each other with about eight leaflets.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blade is pinnate unpaired with 14 to 28 leaflets per leaflet. The leaflets are sessile and usually arranged alternately. They are elongated to almost rectangular and asymmetrical. They are 1 to 4 or 5 inches long and 0.5 to 1.5 or 2 inches wide with multiple, translucent spots. The petiole and the leaf spindle are grooved and together 5 to 15 inches long. The stipules are straight and sloping early.

Inflorescence and flower

The terminal or lateral total inflorescences are composed of 3 to 13 centimeters long and densely hairy, paniculate partial inflorescences.

The whitish flowers are hermaphroditic and almost uniform. Of the four 1 to 3 millimeters long and ovate to elongated and free sepals , one is slightly larger than the others. The five free petals are straight-elongated and 3 to 4 millimeters long. The ten anthers are of different sizes, between 3 and 6 millimeters, and free. The only upper carpel is elliptical-elongated and about 1.5 millimeters long.

Fruit and seeds

The flattened legumes are obliquely inverted-egg-shaped to elliptical and 3.5 to 6 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide. They are pointed and dotted at the tip and smooth to finely warty. It opens with two woody fruit flaps and contains a few seeds , which are flattened.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Gilletiodendron mildbraedii is mainly in the Congo Basin in Central Africa. They occur from southern Cameroon to the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo . There they grow in lowland rainforests many times near rivers and often together with Scorodophloeus zenkeri .

Gilletiodendron mildbraedii is fairly widespread and there doesn't seem to be any evidence that it is affected by erosion . The IUCN has listed them on the Red List of Endangered Species since 2010 as “Least Concern” = “not endangered”.

Taxonomy

The first description of Gilletiodendron mildbraedii was in 1923 by Camille Vermoesen in Man. Essences. Forest. Congo Belg. , P. 85.

use

The wood is used, among other things, for heavy structures, in shipbuilding, for vehicle bodies, floor coverings, interior cladding, pit punches, railway sleepers, toys and veneers. The bark is used to treat syphilis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
