Ginger Johnson

Ginger Folorunso Johnson (* around 1920 in Lagos , Nigeria ; † 1972 ibid) was a Nigerian percussionist who became known in London during the Swinging Sixties with his band "Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers". He is assigned to the English underground scene and has appeared in the UFO Club and at happenings and events such as The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream . On July 5, 1969, "Ginger Johnson's African Drummers" accompanied the Rolling Stones at their concert in Hyde Park .

Born as Folorunso Johnson got the dark-skinned musician nicknamed "Ginger" (dt. Ginger ) because of his reddish hair and his freckles. During the Second World War he left his homeland as a sailor and got to know jazz clubs all over the world. He stayed in England where he played with musicians such as Harry Parry and Edmundo Ros in the 1950s . Eventually he founded his own band "Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers", which mixed original African music with elements of jazz .

Returning to Nigeria, Ginger Johnson died in 1972 after a heart attack.
