Erhard Wehrmann (* 1930 in Liegnitz , Silesia ; † February 5, 2004 in Bad Pyrmont ) was a German photographer who portrayed artists together with their works.

life and work

Wehrmann was a self-taught photographer. From 1955 he began to photograph sculptures using the classic black and white technique on vacation trips to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm. In 1959 he accompanied numerous artists at documenta 2. From 1960 to 1961 he worked for the features section of the Westfälische Rundschau . In 1961 he created his first artist portrait of Eduardo Paolozzi . From 1961 to 1993 Wehrmann worked in the advertising and PR area as a publicity manager for the Hansa brewery, Graetz Bayer, Imperial, Hitachi and Mitsubishi . In 1967 he moved to Karlsruhe. In 1969 he took photos in London for the sculptors Shinkichi Tajiri and Kenneth Armitage . In 1974 he completed an evening course in photography at the VHS Dortmund. He created extensive factory photos for Jaap Mooy, Valeriano Trubbiani, Rainer Irrgang, Ansgar Nierhoff , and Hildegard Lutze. Wehrmann was friends with Peter Sorge and Maina-Miriam Munsky and accompanied the artists photographically until their death. Overall, he created portraits of over three hundred artists, including 1962 Alberto Giacometti at the 31st Venice Biennale , 1964 Henry Moore at the documenta 3, 1966 Roy Lichtenstein at the 33rd Venice Biennale, 1967 Gerhard Richter at Domberger in Stuttgart, 1968 Robert Rauschenberg on of documenta 4, 1972 Rebecca Horn at documenta 5, or Ossip Zadkine , Ernesto Chillida, Jochen Gerz and Joseph Beuys . In 2005, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the documenta Wehrmann , the Stadtmuseum Kassel showed documenta photographs. Erhard Wehrmann's estate is looked after by the Poll Art Foundation .
