Gintautas Zenkevičius (born September 24, 1962 ) is a Lithuanian Major General and Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces since July 29, 2019 .

Life

After graduating from school, Gintautas Zenkevičius studied from 1980 to 1985 at what is now the Technical University of Kaunas . He then worked for a microelectronics company until 1991 .

Military career

Promotions

As part of the detachment of Lithuania from the Soviet Union , Zenkevičius joined the military volunteer organizations of his home country ( Lithuanian Savanorių pajėgos ) in March 1991 and was taken over as an officer by the Lithuanian armed forces, which were being reconstructed, that same year. Until 2004 he remained as a career officer with the voluntary associations and rose there to the position of chief of staff (with the rank of lieutenant colonel ). In the meantime he also attended various training courses in the United Kingdom at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and King's College in order to qualify for higher positions.

Since 2001 he has been one of the officers who were busy planning Lithuania's accession to NATO. After its successful completion, he took over the planning of the Lithuanian operation in Afghanistan in 2005 as part of the ISAF mission and became its first commander. In the same year he was promoted to colonel . After his mission in Afghanistan, Gintautas Zenkevičius completed further training at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London. From 2007 to the end of 2008, he took over the management of the first transformation project of the Lithuanian armed forces. The tasks of the project included converting defense planning from a hazard-based to a skills-based approach.

In 2008, Zenkevičius was appointed Brigadier General. This promotion was followed by various uses in the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense and in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe of NATO . He then served as his country's military representative to NATO and the EU from 2014 to 2018 . Since August 28, 2018 he was the commander of the Lithuanian training and education command ( Lithuanian Mokymo ir doktrinų valdyba ). He has been Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces since July 29, 2019. In this post he was promoted to major general in November 2019.

Private

Gintautas Zenkevičius is married and has two grown children (a daughter and a son). In addition to Lithuanian, he speaks English and Russian.
