Scandal about the Hitler salute
On March 16, 2013, Katidis made international headlines after celebrating a goal in the game against Veria FC with the Hitler salute. One day later, the Greek Football Federation (EPO) banned Katidis from all Greek national teams for life. Katidis asserted that she was not a neo-fascist and that she did not know the meaning of the Hitler salute. With his gesture, he wanted to dedicate the goal to a fellow player in the stands. Nevertheless, on the day of the association's decision, he canceled his contract with AEK Athens on his own initiative. The media sometimes drew parallels to the case of the former Lazio player Paolo Di Canio .
