Giovanni Battista Grassi (born March 27, 1854 in Rovellasca , Province of Como , † May 4, 1925 in Rome ) was an Italian anatomist, zoologist and parasitologist.

Giovanni Battista Grassi studied medicine at the University of Pavia, where he received his doctorate in 1898. At the Anatomical Institute in Heidelberg he worked for Carl Gegenbaur and in Zurich for Otto Bütschli .

Grassi was professor of zoology and comparative anatomy in Catania from 1883 and of comparative anatomy in Rome from 1896. From 1897 he was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and since 1908 Senator of the Kingdom of Italy.

In 1896 he discovered stages of development of young eels in the Strait of Messina, which later led to the problem of eel migration. Grassi discovered in 1898 with his collaborators Amico Bignami (1882-1929) and Giuseppe Bastianelli (1862-1959) that only mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles transmitted human malaria and in 1900 was the first author to use the name Anophelinae for the mosquito subfamily of the Anopheles relatives .

In 1896 he was awarded the Darwin Medal of the Royal Society . In 1916 he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
