biography

Ramelli grew up in Milan , where his father worked as a builder . There he learned the same profession that he practiced after his return to the canton of Ticino in 1830. He represented radical liberal views and was elected to the Ticino Grand Council in 1838 . In December 1839 he took part in the successful armed uprising of the radicals against the Catholic-conservative cantonal government. As a rifle captain he took part in the Sonderbund War in November 1847 , and in March 1848 he commanded a company of Ticino volunteers during the Milan uprising against Austria .

From 1845 Ramelli served as mayor of Barbengo. The Grand Council appointed him one of the Ticino representatives in the Council of States for the years 1851/52 and 1853/54. After the results of the National Council elections in Ticino in 1854 had been declared invalid, a tense political situation arose. This erupted in a popular uprising in February 1855 to protect the radically liberal government from an alleged Austrian conspiracy. During the two-week pronunciamento , Ramelli was a member of the security committee. When he was re-elected in March 1855, he was elected to the National Council in the constituency of Tessin-Süd . Ramelli, who was promoted to rifle major in 1856, remained member of the national council, councilor and mayor until his death.
