Life

Giovanni came from the famous Genoese family of the Fieschi and came into possession of an important fortune through the early death of his father. Filled with fiery ambition as a boy, he participated in a plan in 1544 to invade Genoa with French troops and bring it under his control. But the corps intended for this was defeated by the imperial forces on the approach. Jealous of the Doria allied with Emperor Charles V and relying on his power , he and his brothers Girolamo and Ottobuono and other dissatisfied nobles decided to overthrow the family headed by the Doge Andrea Doria and his cocky, vain nephew Gianettino Doria . The enterprise, which was supposed to break the bond between Genoa and the emperor , was secretly supported by the Pope and France.

Under the pretext of equipping a few galleys for a train against the Ottomans, Fieschi gathered several hundred mercenaries , occupied the gate of St. Thomas with his conspirators on the night of January 1st, 1547, took the harbor guard by surprise, seized the galleys and occupied the main squares of the city.

Gianettino Doria was knocked down, Andrea Doria escaped. Fieschi himself had an accident when he fell into the water from a plank leading from the bank to the galleys, was dragged to the bottom by his heavy armor and drowned. The uprising was over, so that Andrea Doria could return to Genoa. The Fieschi family and the rest of the conspirators were banished from the city forever. Girolamo Fieschi had to surrender his castle to Montobio after a 42-day siege and was executed. Ottobuono Fieschi escaped to France and entered French services, eight years later he was captured by the Spanish, extradited to Genoa and drowned. Fieschi's widow Eleonore Cybò (* 1523), a gifted woman, sister of the Prince of Massa e Carrara, later married General Chiappino Vitelli (General Field Marshal against the rebellious Netherlands in the service of Spain) and died in 1594.

By Jean-Jacques Rousseau , the Fieschi called one of the most remarkable characters in history, pointed out this great stuff has Friedrich Schiller the conspiracy Fieschis in the famous tragedy fiesco processed, 1783 in Bonn came to the premiere.
