Giovanni Palatucci (born March 31, 1909 in Montella ; † February 10, 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp ) was an Italian police officer and commissioner for public security .

Life

In 1930 Giovanni Palatucci did his military service as an officer candidate at Moncalieri . As a member of the Fascist Party , he studied in Turin jurisprudence and graduated in 1932 with diploma. In 1936 he was hired as a voluntary vice commissioner for public security. A year later he was transferred to the police headquarters in Fiume in Istria , Italy at that time , where he was initially responsible for the tourist office. He was then appointed commissioner and chief of police . It is disputed whether he saved the lives of 5,000 Jews in this role.

On September 13, 1944, Palatucci was arrested for high treason and embezzlement. Oral sources claim he was sentenced to death, but there is no documentary evidence to support this fact. Together with other Italian police officers from Fiume and Trieste, who were also accused of treason and embezzlement, he was deported to the Dachau concentration camp, where he died during the typhus epidemic on February 9, 1945, before the camp was deported on April 29, 1945 Allies was liberated.

In 1990 Giovanni Palatucci was included in the directory of the Righteous Among the Nations by the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Center Yad Vashem . On May 15, 1995 he was awarded the Civil Service Medal in Gold by the Italian Government.

On March 21, 2000, the Vicariate of Rome issued an edict introducing the beatification of Giovanni Palatucci. On the occasion of the ecumenical commemoration ceremony on May 7, 2000, Pope John Paul II named him martyr of the 20th century . In 2004 Patalucci was made a venerable servant of God by the Holy See .
